“Since the movie industry is so late to the game, the libraries and archives you maintain are the repository of source material for the study of motion pictures.”

LOOKING FORWARD

The Film Librarians Conference hosted by the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library was held in Los Angeles from April 26-28, 2017 and drew over 150 professionals from over 85 institutions and 16 countries. The conference provided a platform for librarians, archivists, curators and other professionals who care for and manage paper-based film collections to network and learn about current preservation practices through presentations, tours, and programs.

Throughout the event, beyond the enthusiastic cry for a second conference, constant questions and comments arose around the ever-evolving digital landscape that librarians in the 21st century are facing. With that in mind, we are holding a second conference from May 15-17, 2019, with several panels exploring digital collections and challenges. Other events include screenings and tours of local film libraries and archives.

Documenting Cinema, a biennial international Film Librarians Conference, was conceived by librarians from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library in order to facilitate the sharing of ideas and strategies amongst librarians and archivists who maintain and administer paper-based, motion picture-related collections.
